This year, a total of €721 million will be awarded to 281 European scientists through prestigious ERC Advanced Grants. This is an increase of €69 million and 26 scientists on last year’s figures. Two members of the KNCV and one member of the KVCV have been awarded a grant.
The ERC Advanced Grant is one of the European Research Council’s (ERC) funding instruments and aims to give leading scientists who have proven themselves in their field the opportunity to set up ambitious, curiosity-driven research projects.
Significantly more projects were submitted than last year: A total of 2,534 projects were submitted (compared to 1,829 last year), with an award rate of 11% (compared to 14%).
An ERC Advanced Grant amounts to a maximum of €2.5 million, intended for creating research positions. It is estimated that this round will lead to almost 2,700 new jobs for young researchers.
The Netherlands ranks fourth with 24 grants, and Belgium sixth with 17.
Among the laureates in the Physical Sciences & Engineering and Life Sciences categories are two KNCV members and one KVCV member. See the related articles section below for some of our articles with the grantees.
