We would like to thank all the members of the Dutch biotech community that joined the NBC-25. It was an inspiring and enjoyable event where we brought together researchers, industry leaders, and innovators to share ideas and inspire collaboration. Thanks to all of you, for sharing your expertise, your enthusiasm and your ideas and for making it a success!
During his keynote speech, Marcel Wubbolts addressed a few possible misconceptions related to precision fermentation, protein production and social perception of biotechnological process, through conflicting statements presented to the audience. Furthermore, he illustrated progress made by Vivici in the production of bèta lactoglobulin protein using precision fermentation – progress that is rewarded with the Zilveren Zandloper 2025.

Caroline Paul discussed the great potential of enzymes (nature’s catalysts) to replace metals in catalysis and to generate new biosynthetic pathways. She showed examples of her current research on identifying and developing nicotinamide coenzyme biomimetics for oxidoreductases to develop new non-natural cofactors for organic synthesis.

In the final keynote, Eva-Karin Gidlund highlighted the key elements for a caring, loving and successful relationship with a Contract, Development, and Manufacturing Organization (CDMO). Her thought-provoking talk also included some considerations on the business model of pharmaceutical companies and reflected on alternative financial schemes and how they could influence research directions.

Besides these keynotes, there were many other great contributions in the parallel and poster sessions, and members of the 2024 Wageningen IGEM team explained what this competition is about and how they won the price for the best diagnostic application with their accessible test for multiple sclerosis. A big thanks to all presenters for their engaging talks! While all speakers did a great job, two outstanding ones were rewarded; Noor van Wijk and Rob Schmitz won the poster- and poster pitch award, respectively. We look back at a great NBC 2025 – and forward to the next edition! Hope to see you all there!
